P∙A is finalizing the preliminary design for a residential block! This project is being designed in close collaboration with Juli Ontwerp and features 23 comfortable family homes. It includes a community center on the ground floor and a central deck with expansive private and communal terraces. The complex embraces nature with its extensive use of greenery, wood, and bird nesting boxes. Upon completion of the design, the developers will guide the project toward realization.

P∙A is one step closer to the realization of a luxurious penthouse on top of a historical building in the Graaf Florisstraat in Rotterdam. The design boasts a glass structure topping the existing building, mirroring the sky and facilitating a unique 360 degree panoramic view of the city. Moreover, it is entirely bio-based, and the first roof extension of the Netherlands designed with the Passive House™ principles - the latter requiring extra attention to detail. Developed for partner Maarten, this applies even more - all needs to be perfect for an architect’s own house..!;)

NOSTALGIC REVISIT KUBUSWONINGEN

Time has come for a nostalgic revisit of one of P∙A's earliest projects; stayokay Rotterdam, located in the famous cube houses of architect Piet Blom. After years of vacancy, in 2009 P∙A originally transformed the interior to fit the hostel, earning the approval of Piet's son Abel Blom. After decades of use, the hostel requires new floor plans and a fresh, contemporary new face for the lobby and shared facilities. It's an honour to us to yet again work on such a beautiful project!

OFFICE FOR LARGE INTERIOR SHIP BUILDER

Our team has presented the preliminary design for the transformation of a large industrial hall for for De Klerk Binnenbouw (DKB). Having recently celebrated their 150 years of experience in building ship interiors, their work environment needs a revamp. The design strenghtens the connection between white- and blue collar workers through the careful placing and the connecting of various shared functions. As a finishing touch, the design's large entry hall meets mini-expo puts DKB's craftmanship on proud display.

P∙A happily introduces two new members to our team; interns Katja and Mayke! Both of them interns with 'a twist', Mayke will be a member of our team for a year; in the first half actively helping on projects, and in the second half conducting her graduation research at P∙A.

Katja is also doing her graduating project at our office, but not just any - she is studying Communication and Multimedia design, and is helping P∙A further develop our new interactive 3d platform - codename scaffold.

Team P∙A recently went on excursion to one of Europe's most beautiful cities; Paris! Sander meticulously prepared a great program for the team, going mainly off the beaten path and seeing some of Paris's hidden gems. Skipping clichés such as the Eiffel tower, the team went from seeing historical examples of brutalist architecture in the notorious banlieau neighbourhood  to the recently opened ‘Galerie Dior’. A well received twist of the excursion; we visited everything by bike, allowing us to see much more of the city than usual and immersing ourselves in the 'soul' of the city!

TOUR DE PROJETS DE PA

On Friday 9 September we went on an excursion with the entire team along a number of current projects in Rotterdam. With a broad selection of projects, from hotel to residential construction, from renovation to new villa, everything got its turn. Some projects were recently completed, others are still under construction and yet others are just on the way to getting started. In the latter category we unfortunately had to skip the Rijksmonumentale Westelijk Handelsterrein due to a small downpour; a good excuse for part two in the future. Curious and want to see more? CITY PARK WEERT

Last Thursday we had the honour of attending the pre-opening of the city park in Weert by alderman Martijn van den Heuvel and deputy of the province of Limburg, Geert Gabriels. We conceived the design of the stadspark together with Lara Voerman and Nohnik. Nohnik did a great job in bringing this complex puzzle to life. We are looking forward to the public opening coming June.

BOUTIQUE HOTEL WITH SHORT STAY

P∙A is designing a new hotel located on the Witte de Withstraat in Rotterdam. The complex encompasses a commercial plint with shops, restaurants and hotel lobby, 15 hotel rooms and 7 short stay appartments. The edifice is a composite made up of three internally connected historical buildings complemented by a newly constructed corner piece.

CONSTRUCTION OF VILLA PROCEEDS STEADILY

The construction of the villa designed by P∙A, located on the Bergse Linker Rottekade, is progressing according to plan. Contractor Best Bouw is pulling the strings, while the design team is putting the finishing touches on the fixed furnishings and the color and material palette. In addition to our visits to the construction site, we are also following the construction via webcam… The villa is expected to be completed by mid-2022.

P∙A is designing and leading the transformation of the 'Westelijk Handelsterrein' in Rotterdam for Rotterdamsche Stenen and tenant Accor. Previously a buzzing city hotspot, the currently mostly vacant monumental collection of warehouses is redesigned to house a brand new modern hotel concept as well as several smaller public functions and restaurants.

During the past few months P∙A has been working hard on the plans for a new building concept with facilities that are all about mental wellbeing. The building will host therapeutic rooms, workspace, a shop, classrooms, an auditorium and a variety of spaces dedicated to physical and mental relaxation, all of which are oriented around a patio filled with greenery.

REDEVELOPMENT FORMER CINEMA

P∙A is working on the plans for the transformation of 'the Colosseum', a former,well-known cinema in Rotterdam Zuid. We are investigating both the possibilities for transforming the existing building and for constructing a new building in the inner courtyard. In any case, the former entrace to the Colosseum will be restored to its former glory, after which the complex will offer space for a mix of commercial and residential space.

TRANSFORMATION VILLA IN THE HAGUE IN FULL SWING

P∙A is transforming a spacious villa on an extraordinary location; with a beautiful neighbouring park and sea and dunes at a stones throw this urban residence certainly stands out. The vogelwijk is one of the most succesful examples in the Hague of the 'garden city' type neighbourhoods. A beautiful design transforming the 1930 style villa by Marten Zwaagstra into a modern and spacious abode completes the idyllic picture.

‘SCHILDJE’ AWARD MARGRIETSTRAAT

In 2020 our project in the Margrietstraat in Rotterdam has been awarded the 'schildje', by the Vereniging Stedenbouwkundig Wijkbehoud. The 'schildje' is an award accompanied by a physical emblem, and is an official recognition of special care given to a restorative or new building project. In festive spirits and in the presence of the chairwoman of the VSW and several inhabitants, the emblem has recently been permanently put on display on  the façade of the project, 'Op de Hill'.

METAMORPHOSIS PENTHOUSE NEW ORLEANS

P∙A has been commissioned to make an interior design for a striking penthouse in the New Orleans, Alvaro Siza's residential tower counting 47 elevations at 158 meters tall. The appartment measures 250 square meters, featuring 4 seperate balconies with view of the Maas, the harbour and the Rotterdam skyline.

For physiotherapy practice Amyon we are working on the plans for the new office location. To kick off the project, we organized a workshop with the entire Amyon team to discuss the program of requirements and to map out the ideas, dreams and wishes of the therapists. At the end of September we will present the preliminary design to the team. In Virtual Reality, of course!

BUILDING WITHOUT A PERMIT IN ROTTERDAM

Building without a permit? With 'Architect aan Zet' (The Architect in Action) this is possible in Rotterdam, under the supervision of a certified architect. Today Maarten received the required piece of paper from alderman Kurvers and spoke about it with Rijnmond.

Building without a permit has many advantages: you save time and less hassle. The design and building process can be organized more efficiently without sacrificing quality.

TOPPING OUT OF OP DE HILL

Our development 'Op de Hill' is coming to life. Standing on the roof, the heighest point of this project, you get to experience what the future roof top terraces will be like.

The OP DE HILL project was initiated in our development division and designed by our architecture department. OP DE HILL is a small-scale new housing project in Hillegersberg, consisting of seven gasless and energy-efficient homes.

By sacrificing a part of the mezzanine and making a large opening in the dividing wall the kitchen in the basement became part of the living area. Large stairs completed the intervention. The classic front of the house hardly reveals the modern feel at the back of the house, making it a surprise for visitors.

WEERBAAR WEERT

An article discussing the results of Weerbaar Weert appeared in the local newspaper De Limburger! (read the article here) We are excited to share the results of this collaborative research project.

Weerbaar Weert is a vision for the historic city center of Weert based on (design) research. The focus is on the opportunities that the history of the city center can offer when thinking about climate adaptive measures.

We worked in a team with NOHNIK architecture and landscapes and Architectuurhistoricus Lara Voerman in collaboration with the Gemeente Weert. The research is part of the program 'Erfgoed & Ruimte' by the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie and the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed.

VISION ON THE PARK OF WEERT ESTABLISHED UNANIMOUSLY

Personal Architecture is part of a team with NOHNIK architecture and landscapes and Lara Voerman Architectuurhistoricus that won the architect selection of the municipality of Weert for the vision and the design for the redevelopment of the city park in Weert.

The Nijenborgh castle is centrally located in the park. It is historically one of the most important places in the city. From the end of April the design team worked together with a project group of stakeholders on a vision on the redesign of the park. The core of the vision is to make the historical structure of the castle legible, to improve the connections between the park and the city center and to enrich the green structure. The city council of Weert unanimously adopted the vision.

This collaboration is the result of our previous project ‘Weerbaar Weert’ by P·A research.

A NEW PROJECT FOR A FAMILIAR CLIENT

We are always proud & happy to welcome back our clients! For this family, we renovated the upper floor back in 2013 and the ground floor with an extension to the garden in 2016.

Now, the building is up for yet another intervention. We are working on a design to restore the wooden foundations and create a basement. The basement offers space for the kids to chill or to work-out, and it can double up as a guest room.

AKERPOORT: OUR BIGGEST WINDOW YET

This "fenêtre en bandeau" (architecture lingo for horizontal window) at the top floor of retail center Akerpoort spans 67 meters and is 2 meters high. A 4-meter high bay window in the corner facade completes the ensemble. Merel Paes supervising the construction of this transformation carried out by Bouwbedrijf Waleveld en Zonen. The works on th facade are part of an ongoing revitalization of the retail park. Bit by bit we are transforming this building into a sustainable and hospitable shopping experience.

NETWORK EVENT: DESIGNING IN VIRTUAL REALITY

Personal Architecture was present at the network event “Designing in Virtual Reality” organized by Architectenweb and Inbo. We are front runners in using virtual reality (VR) during our design and building process and we were excited to meet other companies invested in this technique as well.

At Personal Architecture, we do not only present but design, cocreate, negotiate, etc. with the help of VR. We continuously are figuring out new ways of working with this emerging design tool. VR IS CHANGING P·A’S DESIGN GAME

When Personal Architecture first embarked on the virtual world four years ago, we began with a very rudimentary set up of cardboard glasses and a mobile phone insert.

Fast forward to the present and we’ve moved far beyond cardboard goggles to HTC Vive virtual reality technology. We discovered along the way that VR is a powerful tool not only in presenting designs to clients but in developing the design alongside them, and the wider consultant team. We now test different design options, lighting, and installation integration. It’s become more and more clear that this tool is significantly impacting how we design, and the quality of the experience we can offer our clients.

SOLAR HUB OF ‘ZON IN DE STAD’ IS TOURING ROTTERDAM

We are having lot’s of fun with the solar hub that is touring Rotterdam all summer.

Kids watching a cartoon, while parents relaxed in the sun to enjoy a coffee and charge their phones. A great way to get conversation on solar energy going.

Zon in de Stad is a movement initiated by Climate Focus, Personal Architecture and Wouter Deen with help of Citylab010 and the Provincie Zuid-Holland.

BNA BESTE GEBOUW VAN HET JAAR!

Check out our entry for the BNA Beste Gebouw van het Jaar! Great to see our project standing next to so many beautiful entries.

We transformed two apartments into one spacious family home in The Hague. A series of bold interventions tie the two houses together.

A floating steel staircase, voids, split-levels, a loggia with a floor-high folding window, a glass floor, walls and ceilings covered with oak wooden parts... this radical transformation in The Hague has all the ingredients that make our architecture-loving heart beat faster. ERFGOED DEAL

On February 21th, minister Van Engelshoven and representatives from governmental organizations singed the ‘Erfgoed Deal’ (Heritage Deal). We presented our project Weerbaar Weert to the minister and Rijksbouwmeester Alkemade and offered the minister a copy of our research.

The ‘Erfgoed Deal’ is an agreement on the use of heritage in the major spatial challenges of our time: energy and sustainability, climate adaptation, and urban growth. Weerbaar Weert is a perfect example of this approach. In the project, we took cultural historic values as the starting point for climate adaptive measures for the historic city center of Weert.

‘Weerbaar Weert’ is a project of NOHNIK architecture and landscapes, Personal Architecture and Lara Voerman for the Gemeente Weert. Weerbaar Weert was part of the 'Erfgoed en Ruimte' trajectory of the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie and the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed.

ROTTERDAM CHILDREN’S CLIMATE AGREEMENT

This morning Jip Pijs was one of the chairmen of the Rotterdam children's climate tables. The group of five kids designed a sustainable Goudsesingel. If it is up to them, this 'street of the future' is car-free with plenty of space for green and water. A place were you can freely skate, play and bike around.

The morning was organized by Archiklas. Afterwards the design sessions, the children presented to the Rotterdam alderman for sustainability Arno Bonte and chairman of the climate table 'built environment' Alex Moret. They received a lot of good ideas and inspiration from this group of young Rotterdammers. Let's get started to turn these into reality!

NEW PROJECT: LUXURIOUS VILLA ON A DIKE

We are working on some exciting new projects in an array of sizes and types. Among which an assignment to design a luxurious villa on a dike for a private client.

Here are a few snapshots of the draft definitive design. From the inside, you experience the different levels of the dike and have changing views on the landscape from each room.

This concept translates to the outside facade with each layer materialized differently. This gives the mass of the building a dynamic envelope.

OPENING OF THE WATCH TOWER IN BERGEN OP ZOOM

The watch tower in Bergen op Zoom is open to the public! Check out this short film documenting the building process of the tower at the Stayokay and Natuurpodium in Bergen op Zoom.

The Stayokay hostel & Natuurpodium we designed opened its doors in 2015 and is now completed with this watch tower attached to the main building. Back in 2015, plans for the watch tower were put on hold. We are happy to finally see this crown jewel of the project being constructed. From now on, you can enjoy wide views on the beautiful nature of the Brabantse Wal.

NEW PROJECT: ENERGY TRANSITION IN REYEROORD

Exciting news: We are going to work in the Rotterdam neighborhood Reyeroord! The area is one of five neighborhoods in Rotterdam selected to become gass-free by 2035. That is a big step for the municipality of Rotterdam and the residents. How can you activate different residents in an neighborhood to contribute in this transition?

We will investigate this question in a team with Zeewaardig & Noorderwind. We will design, cocreate and validate interventions that contribute in this transition

Hooray! Being A Designer and Personal Architecture have been selected for the open call New Housing Concepts for Homeless Youth of the Creative Industries Fund NL (Stimuleringsfonds)

The starting point of the "A New Fundament" project is that a good living concept is more than just a roof over your head. For homeless and homeless young people, a home must primarily be a place from which they can develop themselves.

Hooray! Our colleague Merel can use the title “architect” from now on. Merel successfully completed her PEP (Professional Experience Programme) and can now register in the Dutch architect's register. PEP is an obligatory two-year professional experience period for young architects, urban planners, landscape architects and interior architects to carry the title “architect”. Merel logged her day-to-day experiences at P·A under the auspices of her mentor Maarten.

THE GARDEN CONNECTION - PHASE 3

We are always happy to welcome back our clients! We already partly transformed this Rotterdam family home twice back in 2013 & 2016. Now, we are working on a final intervention.

We are working on the design for this basement as an integral part of the living areas on the ground floor. The new spaces offers room for the kids to chill or to work-out, and can double up as a guest room. The rooms are connected to the other living spaces via the central stairs in the heart of the house.

NEW PROJECT: ELDERLY HOMES WITH COMMUNAL FACILITIES⁠

In 2035, one in five households in Rotterdam will be a 65+ household. There is a great need for adequate housing for vital elderly people in the city. We are working on a new communal housing concept for this target group.

Our proposal consists of five villa pavilions with a total of sixteen homes. The site is surrounded by a green hem. In the heart of the site are a green square and communal vegetable garden. The houses are oriented to this center to promote encounters.⁠ One of the pavilions houses a multifunctional space and guest rooms.

The outdoor spaces of retail center Akerpoort are getting an update. Roughly 2500 square meters of paving, parking spaces and green areas are transformed. P·A has worked on the design together with Joost Emmerik and oversees the execution. The execution is divided in phases to keep parking traffic and shoppers flowing whilst the work is done.

Step by step, we are turning this retail center into a sustainable and hospitable experience for its customers.

COVID-19 & P∙A

To prevent the further spread of the COVID-19 virus, the Dutch government proclaimed further measures this weekend. P.A is following the national guidelines and has taken adequate measures.

From today until at least the end of March our entire team will be working from home. In the meantime, we ware available and working on all our projects and we will not deviate from the agreed project schedules and deadlines.

WORK IN PROGRESS - TRANSFORMATION IN R’DAM

Work in progress. We are coördinating the execution of a transformation project in Rotterdam. Part of the works is replacing the wooden foundation with new concrete poles and adding a basement.

The former office building from the 1890s will be transformed into four apartments and commercial space on the ground floor. A series of new constructive floors, foundations, and basement will make sure the building is futureproofed while the historical facade remains.

NEW PROJECT: ANOTHER SPECTACULAR CONNECTION

Almost 4 years ago we met an ambitious expat couple and made a design for the renovation of their home. The plan connected the mansion in a spectacular way with the adjacent upper house.

Less than a year after completion, the couple was back on the doorstep at P · A: "The lower floors of the neighboring property suddenly went for sale, so we purchased it! " The newest part will serve as a play area for the children, wellness for the parents and guest accommodation.

ARCHITECTURE LESSONS AT THE TALMASCHOOL IN ROTTERDAM

In the past weeks, the 7th grade of the Talmaschool in Crooswijk worked on their designs for new buildings at the Koeweide in their neighborhood. Merel, Rens, and Jip guided the lessons that are part of the education program of IMC Basis at the primary school.

We look back on some unexpected designs were and interesting moments wit the pupils. Thanks IMC Basis s for inviting us once again!

EXCURSION WITH AN ROTTERDAM

Maarten & Sander took part in the yearly Architectennetwerk (AN) Rotterdam excursion.

This year AN Rotterdam visited projects in the Leiden area, including the recently transformed Naturalis building. AN Rotterdam is a collective of Rotterdam-based architects.
